An article published on September 7 in the journal First Monday combines advanced supercomputing quarter century of news from around the world to predict and visualize the human behavior, from civil unrest to the movement of individuals.

The document, entitled "Culturomics 2.0: Forecasting Large-Scale Human Behavior Using Global News Media Tone in Time and Space" (Culturomics 2.0: Prediction of human behavior on a large scale using the tone of the news media and space-time international ), use the pitch and the location of the news coverage from around the world to predict the stability of a country (including, prediction, retroactively, the recent Arab Spring), estimate the final location of Osama Bin Laden a radius of 200 kilometers around Abbottabad and discover the six civilizations of the world of media news coverage. Research also shows that the news is, in fact, increasingly negative, and even displays the global conflict of human society and cooperation in the last quarter century.

Using the large shared memory supercomputer Nautilus, Leetaru Kalev of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, news archives combined three massive with a total of over 100 million articles from around the world, to explore the global awareness of the media.

Advanced methods were used tonal analysis, geographic and network to produce a network of 2.4 petabytes in size with more than 10 million people, places, things and activities connected by more than 100 billion relationships, attracting a cross section of Earth from the media. A subset of the results of this analysis is reproduced below for this study using traditional methods and workflows that offer small-scale model for a new class of digital humanities research that explores how the world looks at itself it.
